Working with schools across County Durham, Darlington and the North-East region, our objective is to enrich the education of students and to enhance their employability skills. We achieve this by producing and facilitating a range of high quality work related programmes which bring together students and representatives from the business world.

Key to our success is the excellent support we receive from local businesses. To maintain the quality of our service and to work with more students, we are constantly seeking to increase the number of organisations working with us.

Durham Education Business Partnership offers a wide range of Work Related Learning activities which make a connection between what students are taught in school and the world of work. Our aim is to equip students with the knowledge, skills and attributes needed for adult and working life.

Examples of the activities we co-ordinate include:

  • Organising interactive Careers in Action events in schools. Employers are invited to set up a stand offering students the opportunity to try out different aspects of the world of work e.g. bricklaying, food testing, crime scene investigation.

  • Finding speakers from industry to talk to students about different aspects of their job role and organisation. This is particularly helpful for students studying vocational courses.

  • Organising workplace visits for students, to enhance and support specified areas of the curriculum.

  • Bespoke one-off events tailored to meet individual school requirements.

The Employer Engagement role of the EBP is to broker relationships between employers and schools to develop new innovative work experience and work related learning activity that meets the needs of employers and schools.

One new innovation is the ‘Learning the Business’ programme, an exciting and innovative concept to promote employability skills in young people. A true partnership between employer and school, it aims to develop new ways of working together to help prepare young people for the world of work. By providing a range of real work related opportunities young people are encouraged to learn through, for and about work.

Taking part in activitiesWork Experience placements offer an opportunity for young people to gain an insight into the world of work, by participating in daily workplace tasks and duties on an employer’s premises’.

Professional Development Placements are a valuable means of helping school staff to develop their understanding of the world of work beyond school and enhancing the delivery of the curriculum. They also form part of an individual’s continuing professional development.

Durham EBP is based at The Work Place, a purpose built vocational centre offering a range of learning opportunities to support the curriculum. All programmes are mapped to Personal Learning & Thinking Skills, the relevant curriculum areas and the Every Child Matters agenda. Where appropriate, programmes are also mapped to Functional Skills and the Framework for Economic Wellbeing 11–19.
