Professional Development Placements

Placements are a valuable means of helping school staff to develop their understanding of the world of work beyond school and enhancing the delivery of the curriculum. They also form part of the individual’s continuing professional development.
Each placement requires the member of school staff to spend a short time in a company/organisation. Before the placement is arranged the needs are assessed, objectives clarified and outcomes defined in order to make the placement relevant and effective both on an individual level and as part of the School Development Plan.

The duration of a placement is flexible and is negotiated according to the aims & objectives of the placement and the resources available within the company. Typically, they last from one to five days, although shorter placements that meet a need can be arranged, as can group provision.

Placements offer school staff the opportunity to:

  • Update skills and knowledge
  • Develop business learning
  • Learn different approaches to management
  • Provide realistic careers guidance to students
  • Prepare young people for the world of work
  • Show students the relevance of classroom theory to the business world
  • Develop resources
  • Encourage useful partnerships with local companies and their personnel

Employers benefit from placements as they:

  • Ensure that local business needs are reflected in classrooms
  • Create a better understanding between schools and companies and encourage reciprocal placements
  • Allow for a greater understanding of the current educational system
  • Update schools' careers information and advise and enhance support of students' careers decisions
  • Provide an opportunity to improve staff development and motivation
  • Enhance the company's reputation

Placement outcomes depend on the individual’s objectives, determined at a pre-placement briefing session. The individual and the employer will evaluate the effectiveness and success of the placement.
