The Work Experience Team arrange placements with employers for students who are in their final two years of compulsory education, as well as placements for students continuing in education. Approximately 7,000 placements are arranged each year for students from secondary and special schools. There are around 4,000 companies who are involved in providing work experience.
The team is responsible for:
- Ensuring that all companies used for work experience are checked for health and safety purposes and have the relevant insurance. This includes placements which pupils have arranged themselves.
- Issuing health and safety information to schools to help with preparation for work experience.
- Providing guidelines on work experience for employers.
- Issuing students with a personal log book to use whilst out on placement to record daily activities and get employer feedback.
- Providing the placements with students.
- The checking of all employers and premises prior to allowing students to go on placement - this is done by qualified Health & Safety staff checking all aspects of employer responsibility and appropriate insurances and providing the employer with schools guidance.
- Providing the schools with information to prepare the students for the work experience.
- Providing the students with Health & Safety information to help prepare them.
- Supplying full placement details to students, including working hours, clothing requirements, lunch arrangements etc.
- Providing information and literature to the schools to help prepare students in advance of their work experience.
